How to Migrate from ChatGPT to Claude

This is one of the most common questions I get at events and after workshops. I put this simple step-by-step guide together to help you make the switch without starting from scratch.

What actually moves over
What transfers
Your memory context: preferences, working style, communication style, background info, and instructions ChatGPT had stored about you.
What does not transfer
Your conversation history and chat logs. Those stay in ChatGPT. You start fresh in Claude, but with your context already in place.
1
Sign in to claude.ai and open Settings

Click your profile icon in the top right corner and select Settings from the dropdown.

2
Go to Capabilities and scroll down
Settings Capabilities Import memory from other AI providers
3
Click "Start import"

Claude gives you a ready-made prompt to copy. This is what you will paste into ChatGPT in the next step.

4
Paste the prompt into ChatGPT

Open a new chat in ChatGPT and paste the prompt. ChatGPT will generate a summary of everything it has stored about you: preferences, instructions, background, and working style.

5
Copy that output and paste it back into Claude

Return to the import window in Claude, paste in everything ChatGPT generated, and press confirm. Claude will process it and store the relevant context in its own memory system.

Good to know: Claude focuses on work-relevant context, so some personal details that are not connected to how you use AI professionally may not carry over automatically. If something important is missing after the import, you can add it manually under Settings > Capabilities > View and edit your memory.
